Troll!!

Post by superrune »

Hi!

I don't know if anyone here have seen the trailer for the Norwegian mock-doc The Troll Hunter. If not, go see it straight away:

I was responsible for one of the trolls in the film, doing everything from initial design, to modeling, rigging, rendering and comping - hiring an animator to help me out. The hair was of course done with Hair Farm! Here are some stills of the troll.

I'll have some proper hires shots and max screengrabs for you later :)

Perhaps I missed it but is there any mention of Hair-Farm in this article? because I didn't see it

Might be worth someone popping by and talking about it.

We were three vendors that did trolls for the movie, and that was not one of my trolls I'm afraid (even though I designed it). The article got biased towards one of the other companies, not much I can do about that. I tried to wedge my work into the comments, but it feels a bit desperate so I'm not going to push it further unless someone explicitly asks about it.

I am preparing some behind the scenes stuff that I hope will be ready early next week. I just need to find the best place to show it for maximum exposure, any suggestions guys?

(Anish, that troll was done in Houdini, with its built-in hair tools)

I will Cem, as soon as I get all the material ready. I'm having a hard time finding available hours to do some proper material, I just hope I can make it before the news value is gone.

Posting here would be like preaching to the choir, though! I would like to see people that aren't familiar with Hair Farm would learn about the project.

Thanks to the holiday break, I finally had some days available to render out some material for you.

First, a still of the Troll:
Image
This is slightly higher resolution than it is in the film, so things are starting to break apart a bit. Looking at the troll at this resolution, I wish I had added particle twigs and dirt to the fur.

Here's a turntable that gives a good view of the Troll and the fur:

And a video showcasing the hair simulation in a walkcycle.

I've actually boosted the sim values in this video, it's a lot subtler in the finished movie.

As you may or may not see, the fur is composed of several components. The first is the short fur (the black object, displayed as fur lines). This was done using the fur modifier, and quickly groomed into shape. A texture map controls its length. Then there's three objects with fur built using hair mesh. There's one for the non-simulated hair in the face (eyebrows, and hair in the nostrils and ears), then there's one for the hair on the body, and one for the hair on the head. The reason for doing separate objects, is because they needed separate values for the simulation. For example, the hair on the head is a lot heavier and (seemingly) sticky than the hair on the body.

Finally, here are some of the VFX shots from the Troll Hunter movie:

I hope you like it!

Most of you have probably seen this. But I made a spoof teaser with the Troll character, and now he has wind in his hair and a new method of rendering: the hair is rendered as polygons in Brazil. That turned out a lot better than I thought it would, even though it worked best at certain distances.

Here's the teaser, I will probably add some behind the scenes stuff later:
